Living on Milwaukee’s Upper East Side

The Standard @ East Library sits in the heart of Milwaukee’s Upper East Side — one of the city’s most walkable, bike-friendly neighborhoods. With a Walk Score of 96 and a Bike Score of 94, daily life here rarely requires a car. The building itself shares space with the Milwaukee Public Library’s East Branch on the ground floor, putting a community resource literally at your doorstep.

The neighborhood draws a lively mix of UW-Milwaukee students, young professionals, and long-time residents who appreciate the tree-lined streets, independent businesses, and easy lakefront access.

Downer Avenue

Step outside and you’re two blocks from Downer Avenue, one of Milwaukee’s most charming commercial streets. Café Hollander serves Belgian-inspired brunch and dinner with a heated patio. Pizza Man has been an East Side staple for decades. Boswell Book Company is one of the few remaining independent bookstores in the metro area, and the historic Downer Theatre shows indie and art-house films. Sendik’s on Downer covers everyday grocery runs without needing to drive.

North Avenue & Nightlife

Head south to North Avenue for the East Side’s bar and restaurant scene. BelAir Cantina serves creative tacos and margaritas, Hooligan’s Super Bar is a neighborhood institution, and the corridor between Farwell and Oakland avenues offers dozens of options for any night of the week.

Lakefront & Parks

Lake Park — a 138-acre Frederick Law Olmsted-designed gem — runs along the bluffs just half a mile east. Walking and biking trails wind through mature trees with panoramic views of Lake Michigan. Bradford Beach is the city’s most popular summer beach, about a 15-minute walk or quick bike ride. Colectivo Coffee’s lakefront café at the old pumping station is a favorite weekend destination. The Urban Ecology Center at Riverside Park is a short walk west, offering nature programs, outdoor gear lending, and community green space along the Milwaukee River.

Culture & Attractions

Milwaukee’s lakefront cultural district is less than two miles south. The Milwaukee Art Museum — with its iconic Calatrava-designed wings — anchors the waterfront. Discovery World offers interactive science and technology exhibits at Pier Wisconsin. The Pabst Theater, one of the oldest operating theaters in the country, hosts live music, comedy, and performances year-round. All are a quick drive or bus ride from the East Side.

University & Education

UW-Milwaukee’s campus begins just three blocks north, with the student union, libraries, and the Klotsche Center recreation facility all within walking distance. The campus brings cultural events, lectures, and athletics to the neighborhood year-round. Hartford Avenue Elementary and Shorewood High School serve families in the area.

Getting Around

The Upper East Side’s density and grid street layout make it one of the most transit-friendly neighborhoods in Wisconsin. MCTS bus routes run along Downer Avenue and North Avenue with frequent service downtown. By car, Downtown Milwaukee and the Historic Third Ward are about 10-12 minutes south. Bayshore Town Center in Glendale is 10 minutes north via I-43. Milwaukee Mitchell Airport is a straight 20-minute drive down I-94.
