No Weight Limit — Bring Your Big Dog
Most Milwaukee apartment communities cap dogs somewhere between 35 and 75 pounds. The Standard does not. Whether you share your home with a twelve-pound terrier or a ninety-five-pound retriever, both are welcome. The only restrictions we maintain are on a small set of dog breeds — common across the apartment industry — and a per-home limit of 2 pets. Cats and dogs are welcomed equally, and vet records are required for both at move-in. For renters relocating from a single-family home or moving in with an adult dog, this matters. Most East Side buildings will turn away large breeds at lease signing — even after a tour and an application. The Standard's no-weight-limit policy lets you bring the dog you actually have, not the dog a leasing office wishes you had.
Pet Fees and Policy at a Glance
Pet rent is $35 per month for the first pet and $50 per month if you have two pets — flat rates with no breed or weight surcharges. There is a one-time, non-refundable pet fee of $250 due at move-in, and no separate per-pet refundable deposit on top of that. Maximum 2 pets per home. Vet records are required for cats and dogs alike, and every resident with a pet signs a pet addendum at lease signing. A short list of dog breeds is restricted: Rottweiler, Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Terrier, Bull Terrier, English Bull Terrier, Siberian Husky, Malamute, Akita, Wolf-Dog hybrids, German Shepherd, Doberman Pinscher, St. Bernard, Dalmatian, Mastiff, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Chow Chow, and Presa Canario. Mixed breeds with significant ancestry from any of these are evaluated case-by-case. The list mirrors standard apartment-industry insurance restrictions and is the only point at which breed plays a role in our policy — there is no muzzle requirement, no temperament test, and no leash-length rule beyond the standard Milwaukee leash law.
Walking Your Dog from The Standard — Lake Park, Bradford Beach, and the Oak Leaf Trail
The Standard at 2340 N Cramer St is one of the best East Side addresses for walking a dog. Lake Park's 138 wooded acres begin half a mile east — the Olmsted-designed park has paved running paths, social areas, and wooded ravines that follow the bluff line above Lake Michigan. The Oak Leaf Trail passes directly through Lake Park, connecting north toward Shorewood and south toward Downtown Milwaukee for longer rides and walks. Bradford Beach is 0.7 miles away, with seasonal off-leash hours typically allowed early morning and late evening — Milwaukee County beach rules vary by season, so verify current designations before letting your dog off lead. Closer to home, the Downer Avenue commercial corridor has wide sidewalks and dog-friendly outdoor patios at several restaurants in warm months. The neighborhood's mature tree canopy shades summer walks; winter walks benefit from the park system's plowed paved paths.
Veterinary Care, Grooming, and Pet Supplies on Milwaukee's East Side
The Upper East Side has a well-regarded set of pet services within a short drive of The Standard. Animal Hospital of Milwaukee on N Oakland Avenue is roughly 1.4 miles away for full-service veterinary care, with several other clinics across Shorewood and Downtown. Independent grooming options operate on Downer Avenue and along North Avenue. PetSmart at Bayshore Town Center is about 4 miles north for supplies, and Downer Avenue has small independent pet boutiques within walking distance for everyday needs. For dog walking and pet sitting, Rover and Wag both have active providers in 53211 — useful for residents who travel for work or want a midday walk while at the office. The Standard's central East Side location makes most of these services either walkable or a quick drive away.
